Alquema’s founder, Virginia Rouse, began as a photographer on film sets in the ’90s where she developed her eye for detail, structure, and texture. On her travels to Japan she fell in love with the Japanese approach to shibori and textural design. Like fashion icons Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto before her, she has taken inspiration from them and their groundbreaking approach to laser cut pleating and moved in her own unique direction. Her pleated dresses, jackets, shirts, skirts and pants are not only easy and fun to wear and affordably priced, but are wonderfully travel proof. Her elegant architectural jackets and coats create a beautiful evening look. The smash pocket dress and coat dresses flatter every body type and have a stylish and relaxed feel about them. I always look forward to seeing what they will be creating for the next season in terms of prints, vibrant colors and new approaches to playing with pleated fabrics, and I am never disappointed.
